The Singing Barrow was commissioned in 2016 for the exhibition “Field Days”. It was inspired by the archaeology and folklore of the South Dorset Ridgeway and based upon local myths that a series of bronze age burial mounds (The Bincombe Bumps) were inhabited by fairies and that you could hear them playing music if you put your ear to the ground at noon. This detail photograph, taken by the artist, shows the fairies drumming on snail shells, against a backdrop of human and animal bones, fossils, crab claws, butterflies, coral, and the buzzing of captive bumblebees.
